In a bid to mitigate the rising cost of living for Edo State residents, Governor Monday Okpebholo has approved a free bus service initiative across the state. The announcement was made on Monday in Benin City, as part of the governor’s five-point agenda aimed at improving the welfare of the people.
The free transportation program, operated through the Edo City Transport Service (ECTS), is designed to benefit residents across Benin metropolis and the three senatorial districts of Edo State. This includes both intra-city and inter-city routes, ensuring widespread coverage.
Governor Okpebholo highlighted the significance of the initiative during the event, emphasizing its role in alleviating the financial burdens faced by residents. “The bus services will ease transportation stress,” he said. “Our people can move around within Benin metropolis and beyond without worrying about extra financial burdens.”
He detailed the extensive reach of the program, which includes key towns and cities in Edo Central, such as Ekpoma, Iruekpen, Irrua, and Uromi. Similarly, areas in Edo North, including Agbede, Auchi, Okpella, and Fugar, are part of the scheme.
The initiative was formally announced in a statement by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor. Itua underscored that the free bus service aligns with Governor Okpebholo’s broader policy direction aimed at addressing economic challenges and enhancing the quality of life for all Edo citizens.
Residents have expressed gratitude for the gesture, hailing it as a timely intervention amidst the current economic difficulties. “This will really help us, especially those who travel frequently between towns for work or education,” said a resident of Auchi.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration continues to prioritize innovative solutions to cushion the effects of economic hardship, signaling its commitment to the welfare and development of Edo State. The free bus service is expected to serve as a model for other states facing similar challenges.
