The United Kingdom has inaugurated its largest Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Africa, situated in Ikeja, Lagos, as part of efforts to enhance visa services for Nigerians. The state-of-the-art facility, operated by VFS Global, was officially launched on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the UK’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Nigeria.
Enhanced Visa Services
The newly established centre, alongside others in Abuja and Victoria Island, Lagos, has been operational since November 19. It is designed to simplify the visa application process and provide a seamless experience for Nigerians traveling to the UK.
The British High Commission in Lagos released a statement highlighting the importance of the new facility. British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter, who attended the opening ceremony, expressed optimism about the improved services.
“I am delighted to witness the opening of this, the largest visa application centre in Africa. Nigeria remains one of the UK’s most important partners, and we hope that VFS delivers ever-improving services for those applying for visas to the UK,” Baxter said.
Meeting Growing Demand
Marc Owen, Director of Visa, Status, and Information Services at UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), described the development as a significant step toward providing world-class visa services in Nigeria.
“In the year to June 2024, we processed more than 225,000 UK visas for Nigerian nationals across all categories. The opening of our new VAC in Ikeja marks an exciting milestone for UKVI and VFS Global in the provision of efficient and accessible visa services,” Owen stated.
New Features and Services
The Ikeja facility introduces a range of optional premium services aimed at enhancing convenience for applicants without impacting processing times or outcomes. These include:
- Document upload assistance.
- Extended submission hours.
- SMS application status updates.
- Courier passport returns.
- The option to retain passports after biometric enrolment.
Abuja residents can also benefit from the Mobile Visa Service, which enables submissions from preferred locations. Additionally, a Premium Lounge option provides a personalised experience with dedicated staff for applicants seeking extra convenience.
UK-Nigeria Partnership
Nigeria accounts for 5% of all global UK visa applications, underscoring the strong ties between the two countries. The new VAC reinforces the UK’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for travel while maintaining efficient and accessible visa processing.
VFS Global, a trusted partner of UKVI since 2003, has expanded its operations to 142 countries, solidifying its reputation for managing visa services worldwide.
A Milestone for Collaboration
The launch of the Ikeja facility underscores the UK’s efforts to bolster its relationship with Nigeria, reflecting the importance of collaboration in facilitating travel and strengthening bilateral ties. With upgraded services and a customer-centric approach, the centre is expected to set new standards in visa processing across Africa.
