The Edo State Government has officially lifted the suspension of its state security outfit, previously known as the Edo State Security Network, and rebranded it as the Edo State Security Corps.
The announcement, made on Friday in a statement by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo, signals the administration’s renewed commitment to strengthening security across the state.
Background of the Suspension
The security outfit was initially suspended by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in September 2024, ahead of the gubernatorial elections. The ban was part of measures to ensure election security remained solely under the purview of the Nigeria Police Force, supported by other agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).
Statement from the Governor
Governor Okpebholo’s decision to lift the suspension was described as a “comprehensive shift in the state’s quest for enhanced safety and security.” The statement noted that with the gubernatorial election successfully concluded, the reinstatement was necessary to reinforce Edo State’s security architecture and safeguard its citizens.
“The decision marks a new chapter in the state’s efforts to ensure safety and order,” Itua’s statement read.
Reintegration Process
To facilitate the reinstatement, the government has mandated all officers of the security outfit to report to the office of the State Commander or the designated zonal offices in Edo North, Edo Central, or Edo South.
“This directive aims to ensure a seamless transition and the effective deployment of the Security Corps,” the statement added.
The Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikilor, also reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to protecting its residents, highlighting that the revamped Security Corps would play a critical role in the state’s overall safety strategy.
Objectives of the Reinstated Corps
The Edo State Security Corps is expected to complement the efforts of federal security agencies in tackling crime and enhancing peace in the state. By rebranding and reorganizing the outfit, the government aims to optimize its operational effectiveness while fostering trust and collaboration with communities across Edo State.
This development underscores the state’s determination to address security challenges proactively and maintain a safe environment for its residents and businesses.
