UK to Deport Nigerian Pastor Tobi Adegboyega Over Alleged £1.87 Million Fraud

Tobi Adegboyega, a controversial Nigerian pastor and cousin to Star Wars actor John Boyega, is set to be deported from the UK following allegations of financial misconduct and fraudulent activities tied to his former church. A UK immigration tribunal ruled against Adegboyega’s appeal to remain in the country, concluding that his deportation would not violate his human rights under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

Church Mismanagement and Allegations of Fraud

Adegboyega, 44, was the head of SPAC Nation, a now-defunct church accused of financial improprieties and a lack of transparency in handling over £1.87 million in funds. Investigations, including one by The Telegraph, revealed questionable financial practices, prompting the closure of the church by the Charity Commission and the High Court.

The tribunal heard allegations that church leaders, under Adegboyega’s guidance, pressured vulnerable young members—predominantly from London’s Black communities—to make large donations. Former members claimed they were encouraged to take out loans, commit benefit fraud, and even sell their own blood to fund the church’s activities.

The Home Office argued that Adegboyega’s leadership enabled a culture of financial exploitation and abuse, further alleging that the church’s leaders lived lavish lifestyles at the expense of their congregation.

Legal Claims and Tribunal Decision

Adegboyega contended that deportation would violate his right to family life, citing his marriage to a British woman and his community work through SPAC Nation. His legal team described him as a “charismatic leader” who helped steer hundreds of young people away from crime, claiming his efforts had earned praise from politicians, including former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and senior Metropolitan Police officials.

However, the tribunal found these claims exaggerated. While Adegboyega denied any criminal charges relating to SPAC Nation’s finances, the Charity Commission determined there had been significant misconduct over an extended period. The tribunal also criticized Adegboyega’s testimony, calling it “hyperbolic” and finding his influence on the church’s projects overstated.

“We are not satisfied that the good work that SPAC Nation undertakes generally would collapse or even significantly suffer should the Appellant be required to leave the UK,” the tribunal stated.

The ruling also noted that Adegboyega’s family and private life relationships were established while he was in the UK unlawfully, having overstayed his visitor’s visa since 2005.

A History of Controversy

SPAC Nation faced public scrutiny over its financial practices and allegations of cult-like behavior. Former members accused the organization of exploiting impoverished congregants while its leaders displayed ostentatious wealth, including luxury cars and designer clothing.

Adegboyega denied the accusations, claiming they were politically motivated and rooted in a misunderstanding of his church’s practices.

Next Steps

With his appeal dismissed, Adegboyega is set to be deported to Nigeria. The tribunal ruled that the interference with his life in the UK would be minimal and lawful, as his family relationships could endure despite his removal.

The decision highlights the UK government’s commitment to tackling financial misconduct and ensuring that charitable organizations operate with transparency and integrity.
