The Igbo Youths Council has strongly criticized the recent arrest of prominent human rights lawyer and activist, Comrade Dele Farotimi, describing the incident as a targeted attempt to stifle the voice of the Nigerian masses and suppress dissent.
Led by Comrade Igboayaka Igboayaka, the council expressed outrage over what they termed the “brazen victimization” of a staunch advocate for social justice. Farotimi’s arrest, captured in a widely circulated viral video, showed police officers allegedly assaulting workers at his law firm, confiscating phones, and seizing office equipment.
“We are shocked and outraged to witness the Nigeria Police manhandling workers at the law firm and unlawfully confiscating private property,” Igboayaka stated. “This arrest is not just an affront to Farotimi Dele; it is a direct attack on freedom of speech, expression, and the fundamental human rights of every Nigerian.”
The group further expressed concerns over the alleged involvement of respected legal luminary Pa Afe Babalola, SAN, urging him to dissociate himself from actions that could tarnish his hard-earned reputation.
“This arrest is a clear attempt to suppress Farotimi’s fearless stance against injustice and corruption,” Igboayaka said. “We appeal to those behind this suppression to understand that his activism is critical in addressing the systemic abuse of power and promoting accountability.”
Farotimi’s Role in Advocating for Justice
The council highlighted Dele Farotimi’s dedication to justice, transparency, and fairness in governance, describing him as a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s fight for democracy.
“Farotimi represents the voice of the oppressed, the marginalized, and those who demand justice. Silencing him is a disservice to democracy and an affront to the principles of equity and fairness,” the statement read.
The Igbo Youths Council emphasized the importance of protecting activists like Farotimi, whose work they believe is essential for building a just society.
Call for Action
The council urged the Nigeria Police Force to respect citizens’ fundamental rights and reconsider actions that undermine democratic principles and the rule of law. They also called on civil society organizations, legal practitioners, and Nigerians to stand in solidarity with Dele Farotimi.
“The victimization of advocates for justice is a dangerous precedent. We must collectively resist efforts to silence voices that speak for the people,” Igboayaka concluded.
The arrest of Farotimi has sparked widespread debate about human rights and freedom of expression in Nigeria, with many calling for greater accountability within the country’s security agencies.
