A celebration turned tragic in Uganda when a 30-year-old Arsenal fan, John Ssenyonga, was fatally shot by a security guard during festivities following Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United. The incident occurred at a restaurant in Lukaya town, located about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Uganda’s capital, Kampala.
Jubilation Turns Fatal
The fatal shooting unfolded towards the end of the Premier League match, as a group of jubilant Arsenal supporters gathered at the restaurant to celebrate the win. Reports suggest that the restaurant’s manager, upset by the noise from the cheering fans, instructed the security guard to intervene.
According to witnesses, the fans ignored warnings to quiet down. In response, the manager reportedly cut off the restaurant’s power supply, further enraging the crowd. The situation escalated when the security guard allegedly opened fire, firing multiple shots into the crowd.
Ssenyonga died at the scene, while another fan, identified as long-time Arsenal supporter Lawrence Mugejera, sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Suspects on the Run
Both the security guard and the restaurant manager fled the scene following the shooting. Regional police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed that authorities recovered a firearm at the scene and have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
“We condemn the incident and urge anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation,” Kasirye said. He also called on fans to exercise restraint during celebrations to prevent similar tragedies.
Shock and Outrage
The incident has sparked widespread outrage among local football fans and the broader community. A local journalist, Farish Magembe, reported that the celebration had been a typical display of excitement among football enthusiasts until the tragic escalation.
Football, a unifying pastime in Uganda, often brings fans together to celebrate their favorite teams. However, this incident has highlighted the need for increased accountability and measures to ensure the safety of fans during public gatherings.
Calls for Justice
As police continue their investigation, authorities have appealed to witnesses to provide information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects. Community leaders have also urged restaurant and event managers to handle disputes with caution to prevent such incidents in the future.
For now, Arsenal fans in Uganda mourn the loss of one of their own, a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers that can arise from what should have been a moment of shared joy.
