The much-anticipated Premier League Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed due to severe weather conditions caused by Storm Darragh. High winds and heavy rainfall have wreaked havoc across the western United Kingdom, prompting widespread travel disruptions and safety concerns.
Everton, in a statement, confirmed that the decision was made following consultations between both clubs, local police, and Liverpool City Council.
“Whilst we appreciate this will be deeply disappointing for supporters, the safety of fans, staff, and players is of paramount importance,” the club said.
Storm Darragh has led to a rare red weather warning from the UK’s Met Office for southwest England and Wales, indicating a significant risk to life and property. Other football fixtures have also been impacted, with Championship games in Plymouth and Cardiff postponed on Friday.
This match was set to be a historic encounter, marking the final Merseyside derby at Everton’s Goodison Park, the club’s home since 1892. Next season, Everton is set to move into a new state-of-the-art 53,000-capacity stadium.
Liverpool, who lead the Premier League by seven points after 14 games, will now have their fixtures rescheduled as they continue their push for another league title.
No new date has yet been announced for the derby, but both clubs emphasized the importance of ensuring safe conditions for all involved before proceeding. Fans eagerly await the rescheduling of this iconic fixture in what promises to be a season-defining match.
