Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State — Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 elections and former Governor of Anambra State, paid a visit to legal luminary Afe Babalola, SAN, in Ado-Ekiti on Monday. The visit centered on discussions regarding human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi, who is currently held in Ekiti prison.
The meeting took place at the Afe Babalola University office, where Obi and Babalola reportedly engaged in an in-depth dialogue on resolving the legal dispute involving Farotimi through alternative means.
Background to Farotimi’s Detention
Dele Farotimi, a prominent activist and author of Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, was remanded in custody after being arraigned on charges of defaming Afe Babalola. The allegations stem from claims made in Farotimi’s book, which reportedly damaged the reputation of the esteemed legal figure and founder of Afe Babalola University.
Farotimi pleaded not guilty to the 16 charges leveled against him during his arraignment last Wednesday.
The police prosecutor, Samson Osun, argued against bail, citing the need for further investigation and public safety. However, Farotimi’s defense attorney, Dayo Akeredolu, contested this position, urging the court to grant bail on self-recognition. Akeredolu emphasized Farotimi’s well-known status and argued that he posed no threat to public safety.
Efforts Toward Resolution
Sources familiar with Obi’s meeting with Babalola confirmed that the former presidential candidate appealed for an amicable resolution to the dispute. Obi reportedly emphasized the need for dialogue and reconciliation, highlighting Farotimi’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic and human rights landscape.
While no immediate resolution was announced, Obi’s intervention has raised hopes for a peaceful and constructive end to the legal tussle.
Farotimi’s next court appearance is set for January 29, 2025, during which further developments in the case will likely unfold.
