Midnight Inferno Destroys Goods Worth Millions at Alaba Rago Market in Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria — Chaos erupted in the early hours of Wednesday when a massive fire swept through the bustling Alaba Rago Market, located in the Ojo area of Lagos State.

The fire reportedly began around midnight, quickly spreading through sections of the market and destroying goods and property estimated to be worth millions of naira. Eyewitnesses described the scene as devastating, with shop owners and traders scrambling to salvage what they could from the flames.

Cause of Fire Still Unknown

As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the fire remained undetermined. Authorities have yet to ascertain whether it was triggered by an electrical fault, negligence, or another factor.

Swift Emergency Response

Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), and other relevant agencies, were deployed to the scene to combat the raging fire.

Speaking on the incident, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Femi Oke-Osayintolu, confirmed that their teams had contained the fire to prevent it from spreading to adjacent properties.

“We have successfully brought the situation under control, limiting the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause,” Oke-Osayintolu stated.

Similarly, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, praised the coordinated efforts of the response teams.

“Our priority was to mitigate further damage and ensure the safety of residents and traders in the vicinity. We will continue to monitor the area for any potential resurgence of the fire,” Adeseye added.

Traders Count Losses

Many traders arrived at the market in the morning to find their shops reduced to ashes. The devastation has left several families in financial distress, as the market is a major hub for livestock, foodstuffs, and other goods.
One distraught trader lamented, “Everything I have worked for is gone. I don’t know how I will recover from this.”

Call for Enhanced Safety Measures

The incident has reignited discussions about fire safety in markets across Lagos. Experts and authorities have urged traders and market operators to adopt preventive measures, including proper electrical installations, regular inspections, and adherence to safety guidelines.

The Lagos State Government has pledged to support affected traders while also promising a thorough investigation into the incident to prevent future occurrences.
