President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the State House in Abuja as part of a three-day state visit aimed at bolstering Nigeria-Germany relations.
The German leader arrived at the Forecourt of the State House at 11:06 a.m. to a warm reception by President Tinubu and members of the Federal Executive Council. The ceremony included a rendition of the German national anthem Deutschland über alles and the Nigerian national anthem. President Steinmeier also inspected a guard of honour mounted by the Brigade of Guards, culminating in a 21-gun salute.
In a statement released by the German Embassy, the visit is described as a pivotal moment in enhancing bilateral cooperation. During his time in Abuja, President Steinmeier is scheduled to hold discussions with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Alieu Omar Touray, emphasizing Germany’s commitment to strengthening ties within the West African sub-region.
President Steinmeier’s itinerary also includes a visit to Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub. While in Lagos, he plans to meet with business leaders, explore innovative start-up hubs, and engage with key figures in Nigeria’s vibrant cultural and civil society sectors. Among the highlights are interactions with Dr. Nike Okundaye, founder of the Nike Art Gallery, and Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka.
This visit comes on the heels of a recent surge in diplomatic exchanges between Nigeria and Germany. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Nigeria in October, and President Tinubu traveled to Germany in November. These high-level engagements signal a deepening partnership between the two nations under President Tinubu’s administration.
The German Embassy noted that this visit underscores Germany’s recognition of Nigeria’s critical role on the international stage and its shared vision of mutual prosperity and global cooperation.
Steinmeier’s engagements in Nigeria are expected to lay the groundwork for expanded collaborations in trade, innovation, culture, and regional stability, further cementing the growing relationship between the two countries.
