The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has begun exporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, to several African nations, including Cameroon, Ghana, Angola, and South Africa. This milestone reflects the refinery’s growing international influence and its contribution to redefining Africa’s energy landscape.

The Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Dr. Devakumar Edwin, made the announcement during a visit from the Japanese Business Community in Nigeria, led by Japan’s Ambassador-designate, Suzuki Hideo.

Emerging as a Global Player

Dr. Edwin highlighted the refinery’s role in supplying high-quality petroleum products globally. “In recent weeks, we’ve exported petrol to Cameroon, Ghana, Angola, and South Africa, among others. Diesel has been shipped to international markets worldwide, and our jet fuel is gaining traction in Europe. Our products are already making an international impact,” he stated.

The Dangote Refinery, touted as the world’s largest single-train refinery complex, leverages Africa’s crude oil resources to produce refined products locally. This approach aims to foster industrial development, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.

A Nigerian Vision on the Global Stage

Dr. Edwin expressed pride in the refinery’s achievements, emphasizing its roots in Nigeria. “This facility represents the vision of Aliko Dangote, a Nigerian investor. It was designed and built by Nigerians to serve both local and global markets,” he said.

The facility, developed by Dangote Industries Limited, also served as its own Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor, showcasing Nigeria’s capacity for large-scale industrial projects.

Collaboration with Japan

During the visit, Dr. Edwin underscored the existing partnership with Japanese companies and their technological contributions to the refinery and fertiliser plant. “We have a lot of Japanese equipment in both facilities, and there is immense potential for further collaboration. For instance, our cement plant laboratory is managed by robots, demonstrating our commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology,” he noted.

Japan’s Ambassador-designate, Suzuki Hideo, described the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals complex as a technological marvel. “This facility is an astonishing masterpiece, showcasing Nigeria’s advancements on the global stage,” he said.

The Japanese delegation, including representatives from the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) and Itochu Nigeria Limited, toured the refinery and commended its scale and state-of-the-art technology.

A Boost for Nigeria’s Economy

Dr. Edwin highlighted the refinery’s potential to transform Nigeria’s economy by reducing foreign exchange outflows, increasing tax revenues, and significantly contributing to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The project is also expected to boost downstream industries and create substantial employment opportunities.

Masahiro Tsuno, Managing Director of Itochu Nigeria Limited, praised the refinery’s scale and innovation. “This refinery is a miracle—a one-of-a-kind project built by a single investor. Its size and automation are unparalleled,” he remarked.

Solidifying Nigeria’s Role in Africa

The Dangote Refinery’s success further cements Nigeria’s leadership in Africa’s energy sector. “This facility is a remarkable introduction to Nigeria for the global community,” said Takashi Oku, Managing Director of JETRO.

As the Dangote Refinery continues to expand its global footprint, it sets a new benchmark for industrial innovation and economic transformation in Africa. The refinery’s achievements exemplify Nigeria’s potential to lead the continent in technological advancements and sustainable development.
