Tinubu Jokes About Re-Election During 2025 Budget Presentation at National Assembly

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sparked laughter and applause at the National Assembly on Wednesday during his presentation of the 2025 budget when he humorously addressed lawmakers as “all re-elected” after mistakenly referring to the 10th Assembly as the 11th.

The lighthearted moment occurred as the President delivered his remarks to a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives. After being gently corrected by lawmakers that they were the 10th National Assembly, Tinubu quipped, “10th? I wrote 11th, which means you’re all re-elected,” drawing smiles and cheers from the chamber.

Formal Presentation of the 2025 Budget

President Tinubu arrived at the National Assembly at exactly 12:14 p.m. and was welcomed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and other top government officials. The President presented the proposed ₦47.96 trillion budget for 2025, emphasizing its importance in rebuilding Nigeria and laying the foundation for sustainable prosperity.

“In fulfilment of one of my constitutional duties and with an unyielding commitment to rebuilding Nigeria towards ensuring that we remain steadfast on a journey to a prosperous future, I hereby present the 2025 budget to the joint session of the National Assembly,” Tinubu stated.

Focus of the 2025 Budget

The budget, tagged as the “Budget of Renewed Hope and Resilience,” outlines expenditure priorities aimed at infrastructure development, economic diversification, and social welfare improvements. It also includes significant allocations for education, healthcare, and national security.

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline and economic reform, aiming to stimulate growth and address pressing challenges such as unemployment, inflation, and infrastructure deficits.

Legislative Deliberations to Follow

The National Assembly will begin detailed deliberations on the proposed budget in the coming days, examining allocations and revenue projections. Lawmakers have pledged to ensure that the budget aligns with the nation’s developmental goals and addresses the needs of Nigerians.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in his opening remarks, commended the executive for its efforts and assured Nigerians of the legislature’s dedication to passing a budget that prioritizes the welfare of the people.

A Moment of Levity

Tinubu’s off-the-cuff remark added a touch of humor to an otherwise formal event, reflecting a cordial relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government. The moment was widely shared on social media, with Nigerians reacting positively to the President’s wit and composure.

As the budget process moves forward, the focus now shifts to the National Assembly’s critical role in shaping Nigeria’s financial roadmap for 2025.
