In a decisive move to safeguard public health, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down an illegal cosmetic production facility in the Ipaye area of Iba, Lagos. The unregistered factory was found manufacturing a range of potentially harmful cosmetic products in unhygienic conditions, posing significant risks to consumers.
Through an official statement and videos posted on X (formerly Twitter), NAFDAC revealed the alarming state of the facility, including its unsanitary environment and the unregulated nature of the products. The agency highlighted the grave danger posed by the unapproved items, which were manufactured without adherence to safety standards or proper oversight.
Weeks of Surveillance Culminate in Raid
After weeks of covert surveillance, NAFDAC officials executed a well-coordinated raid on the premises. During the operation, a substantial quantity of unregistered cosmetic products was seized, including body washes, cleansing soaps, skin-lightening creams, and skincare items intended for children. Packaging materials intended for mass distribution were also confiscated, indicating the large-scale reach of the illegal enterprise.
The facility has since been sealed to prevent further activities, and one individual associated with the operation has been apprehended. The suspect is currently assisting investigators with ongoing inquiries.
NAFDAC’s Commitment to Public Health
Reiterating its dedication to protecting Nigerian consumers, NAFDAC assured the public that it would continue clamping down on unregulated and unsafe products in the market. “We remain committed to ensuring public health and safety by eliminating unsafe and unregulated products from circulation,” the agency stated in its post.
A Call for Vigilance
NAFDAC also urged citizens to remain vigilant when purchasing cosmetic products and to report suspicious or unregistered items. The agency emphasized that public cooperation is crucial in combating the proliferation of hazardous goods and protecting consumers from potential harm.
This operation underscores NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts to maintain high standards in the health and beauty sector and to protect the well-being of Nigerians.
