The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, following a tragic stampede at a children’s carnival she organized in Ibadan. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, has claimed the lives of 35 children, with six others in critical condition.

Police spokesperson Adewale Osifeso disclosed in a statement on Thursday that eight individuals, including Naomi, 31, and the school’s principal, Fasasi Abdulahi, 56, were detained in connection with the tragic event. Others arrested include Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin, aged between 25 and 52.
“The eight persons have been arrested for their various involvements in the event,” Osifeso stated. He added that the case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, where a Deputy Commissioner of Police will lead the inquiry to ensure justice is served.
