Owerri, Nigeria: Controversial rapper Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has been granted bail following nearly a month in police custody. The rapper’s detention, which began on November 27, stemmed from allegations of abusive comments about Afrofusion superstar Burna Boy and his associations.
The Arrest
Speed Darlington was apprehended while performing at an event in Owerri, Imo State. The arrest reportedly followed his public taunts aimed at Burna Boy, particularly regarding the Grammy winner’s ties to embattled American rapper and producer Sean “Diddy” Combs, who faces serious accusations of sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
Sources suggest that Burna Boy played a role in Darlington’s arrest. The allegations came after Darlington repeatedly criticized Burna Boy on social media, vowing to continue calling him out despite facing legal action.
Legal Proceedings
Darlington’s lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, had earlier indicated that the rapper was being held without formal arraignment. He filed a Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure (FREP) application to challenge the detention.
On Monday, Alieke, another representative for Darlington, confirmed the court’s decision to grant bail in an Instagram post. “Apki has been granted bail by the court,” Alieke wrote, withholding further details about the ruling.
Adeyanju also announced the court’s order that the rapper be arraigned within 48 hours or released. “Our FREP application for Speed Darlington has been granted by the court. He is to be arraigned within 48 hours or released. Issues around injustice may take time, but justice will always prevail,” Adeyanju said.
Reactions and Next Steps
Darlington’s release comes after public outcry and widespread calls for transparency in the legal proceedings. Fans of the rapper expressed relief on social media, with many hailing the decision as a victory for justice.
Despite his release, Darlington remains defiant, maintaining his stance on calling out Burna Boy and his affiliations. His lawyer has hinted at further legal steps to address what they describe as unjust treatment during the detention.
A Controversial Figure
Known for his outspoken personality and controversial statements, Speed Darlington has built a reputation for stirring public discourse on various issues. His latest legal battle has brought renewed attention to the influence of high-profile figures in Nigeria’s justice system and the broader implications for free speech.
Darlington’s bail marks a significant turn in the case, though the coming days will determine how the legal process unfolds as he awaits possible arraignment or full exoneration.
