In a dramatic turn of events, Mudashiru Obasa has been impeached as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following a decisive vote by 32 members of the Assembly. The impeachment, which took place during an emergency plenary session on Monday, is the culmination of mounting allegations of corruption, financial mismanagement, and abuse of office against the former Speaker.
The lawmakers unanimously voted to remove Obasa after weeks of internal investigations and public outcry over alleged fraudulent spending and misuse of funds.
According to sources within the Assembly, the most damning accusation against Obasa was the controversial approval of N17 billion for the construction of a gate at the Assembly complex. Critics, including some Assembly members, described the expenditure as “outrageous, unnecessary, and a blatant misuse of public funds.”
