Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz showcased his prowess on the clay courts of Buenos Aires as he secured a spot in the tournament’s semi-finals on Friday. The world number two displayed his dominance with a straight-sets win over Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori.
Facing off against the 152nd-ranked opponent, Alcaraz delivered a commanding performance, triumphing 7-6 (7/1), 6-1. Despite Vavassori’s notable past achievements, including a victory over three-time major winner Andy Murray, the Spanish star remained unfazed and controlled the match from start to finish.
Reflecting on his performance, Alcaraz acknowledged the challenge posed by Vavassori in the opening set. “In the first set, he played such a high level,” Alcaraz remarked. “It was really tough to return his serve and challenging conditions with the wind. But I think I played better in the second set.”
Indeed, Alcaraz’s superior play saw him surge to a commanding 5-0 lead in the second set, ultimately securing victory after an hour and 40 minutes on court. “His level went down a bit, with his serve as well, and I put some returns in, took my chances, and I think that was the difference,” Alcaraz noted.
With this impressive win, the 20-year-old Spaniard sets his sights on the semi-final clash, where he will face either Chilean third seed Nicolas Jarry or Argentina’s Tomas Etcheverry, seeded sixth. The stage is set for an exciting showdown as Alcaraz continues his quest to defend his Buenos Aires title.
Meanwhile, the other semi-final will feature an all-Argentine matchup, with Facundo Diaz set to square off against Federico Coria, promising fans an intense battle on the clay courts of Buenos Aires.
