Gunmen on Tuesday stormed Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, abducting four students, the school principal and a National Examinations Council (NECO) ad hoc official while candidates were writing their examination.
The attack occurred at about 5:25 p.m., according to the Kogi State Police Command.
Security agencies have since launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation to locate the victims and apprehend those behind the attack.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, disclosed that one of the abducted students had been rescued, while efforts were ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims.
She said police operatives, working alongside other security agencies, had intensified operations in the area following the incident.
According to the police spokesperson, the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, accompanied by the Brigade Commander and the State Security Adviser to the Governor, Commodore Jerry Omodara (Rtd), was on the way to the school for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
The command assured residents that every effort was being made to ensure the safe rescue of those still in captivity and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Police added that a comprehensive statement would be issued as more verified information becomes available from the ongoing investigation and rescue operation.
