In a recent development, the British Council in Nigeria has implemented a 29% increase in the fees for the English Language Testing System (IELTS) examinations. The updated fee structure, as indicated in a notice published on the council’s website, will be effective from February 1, 2024, affecting both the Computer Academic and General Training Modules. Applicants will now be required to pay N139,000 for these modules.
The IELTS examination holds significant importance globally, serving as a widely accepted benchmark for non-native English speakers to demonstrate their language proficiency. The British Council, in its notice, attributed the fee adjustment to the rising costs associated with conducting the examinations.
“We would like to inform you that there has been a review of our IELTS fees. The new price list of the IELTS range of tests offered by the British Council will be effective for registrations on or after 1 February 2024. The new prices will be as follows:
- IELTS on Computer Academic and General Training Modules: ₦139,000
- IELTS on Paper Academic and General Training Modules: ₦134,000
- UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI): ₦149,000
- Life Skills: ₦130,000
- One Skill Retake (O.S.R): ₦87,570″
The notice emphasized that the adjustment in prices is a response to the increased costs associated with delivering the exams. The British Council aims to sustain its ability to provide a broad spectrum of services and comprehensive support to candidates pursuing their goals.
The recent fee hike marks the second adjustment within a relatively short period. In September 2023, the British Council had previously increased the IELTS examination fee, raising it from a range of N80,000 to N90,000 to the revised fee of N107,500. The successive adjustments reflect the ongoing efforts to maintain the quality and accessibility of the examination services while addressing the economic factors impacting the cost of delivery. Applicants and stakeholders are encouraged to take note of these changes as they plan for their IELTS examinations in Nigeria.
