British-Nigerian singer and songwriter Talay Riley has died after a fatal stabbing in East London, prompting police to launch a murder investigation into the incident.
Talay, born Mark Yinka Orabiyi, was attacked on Pankhurst Avenue in Silvertown at about 9 a.m. on Friday. Emergency services responded to the scene, but the 35-year-old musician could not be saved.
Authorities have confirmed that homicide detectives from the Specialist Crime Command are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
In a statement, Talay’s family announced his passing and expressed profound grief over the loss.
“It is with overwhelming sadness that we confirm that Mark ‘Yinka’ Orabiyi, professionally known as Talay Riley, passed away yesterday morning,” the family said.
They described the late artist as a Grammy Award-winning and multi-platinum-selling songwriter whose talent, generosity and vibrant personality left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
The family also expressed gratitude for the messages of support, visits and condolences received following the tragedy.
Talay enjoyed a successful career in the music industry spanning more than a decade. He secured a publishing deal with Global Publishing at the age of 18 and later signed with Jive/Sony Records after appearing on a 2009 single by British rapper Chipmunk.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the music industry, including from his brother, acclaimed music producer Scribz Riley.
In an emotional Instagram post, Scribz described Talay as not only a brother but also a mentor, inspiration and source of light to countless people.
“My heart is shattered. This doesn’t feel real,” he wrote, recalling their final conversation about future plans and remaining positive.
He praised his brother’s kindness, generosity and ability to touch lives through both his music and personal relationships, adding that his legacy would endure through his work and the many people he inspired.
Several prominent figures in the music industry also paid tribute to the late artist, including rapper Stormzy and singer Craig David, who collaborated with Talay on his 2018 album, The Time Is Now.
Police have yet to announce any arrests as investigations into the killing continue.
