Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has officially rejected a high-value contract proposal from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, choosing instead to remain at Old Trafford and continue competing at the highest level of European football.
The decision was confirmed on Tuesday by renowned Italian football journalist, Fabrizio Romano, who reported the development on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
Romano revealed that despite receiving what he described as a “crazy contract proposal” from the Saudi Pro League giants, Fernandes firmly declined the offer, reaffirming his commitment to Manchester United.
“Despite a crazy contract proposal from the Saudi Pro League club, Bruno Fernandes wants to continue playing football in Europe,” Romano posted. “Man United captain wants to play at top level in Europe. Decision made.”
The Portuguese midfielder, who has been central to Manchester United’s squad since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2020, has reportedly drawn interest from several top clubs in recent months. However, the 29-year-old playmaker has consistently emphasized his desire to help restore United’s glory and compete in elite competitions like the UEFA Champions League.
Al-Hilal, known for securing high-profile signings such as Neymar Jr. and Kalidou Koulibaly, has made aggressive moves in the transfer market as part of Saudi Arabia’s broader investment in football development and global sporting influence. Fernandes’ rejection signals a growing awareness among top European stars about the competitive relevance and legacy offered by staying in Europe.
Fernandes, who took over the captain’s armband from Harry Maguire in the 2023/2024 season, remains a vital figure in Erik ten Hag’s squad and is expected to play a leading role in United’s rebuild ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.
His decision to remain with the Red Devils has been widely praised by fans and pundits alike as a testament to his leadership and professional ambition.
