LAGOS — Nigerian content creator and musician, Carter Efe, whose real name is Oderhohwo Efe, has become Africa’s most-followed streamer on Twitch following a widely viewed livestream featuring Afrobeats superstar Davido.
Efe clinched the continental record after surpassing fellow Nigerian creator Adesokan Emmanuel, popularly known as Shank Comics, who previously held the title.
The milestone followed a high-profile Twitch session hosted by Efe on Wednesday, during which Davido made a guest appearance. The broadcast triggered a sharp surge in Efe’s follower count on the platform.
Checks on Thursday showed that Efe had accumulated more than 405,000 followers on Twitch. By comparison, Shank Comics, who set the earlier record about six months ago, currently has approximately 233,000 followers.
Efe’s rise was rapid and significant. From about 322,000 followers earlier in the week, he gained an estimated 160,000 new followers within four days, a growth attributed largely to the anticipation and execution of the Davido livestream.
The session also set other records. Davido reportedly became the first African streamer to exceed 20,000 subscribers on Twitch and set a new benchmark for the most-watched Twitch livestream in Africa, attracting about 83,000 viewers.
During the broadcast, Davido introduced Efe to several prominent personalities, including his wife and nightlife entrepreneur, Cubana Chief Priest. He also made a call-out to Twitch Chief Executive Officer, Dan Clancy.
The livestream further featured a phone call with Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, whose appearance excited viewers and added a sports dimension to the show.
Adding to the entertainment, content creator Enzo made a surprise appearance, humorously challenging Efe to an impromptu boxing match to “prove” his loyalty to Davido’s 30BG fan base. The exchange quickly went viral, drawing widespread reactions across social media platforms.
