Chelsea F.C. have appointed Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager on a four-year contract, with the Spaniard set to officially assume duties on July 1, 2026.
The announcement was made on Sunday following Chelsea’s disappointing FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City F.C. at Wembley Stadium. The London side currently sit ninth in the Premier League with only two matches left in the season.
Chelsea described Alonso’s appointment as a major step in their efforts to rebuild the team and return to competing for top honours.
Alonso earned widespread recognition after guiding Bayer 04 Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga and German Cup double during the 2023/24 campaign, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most highly rated young coaches.
However, his stint with Real Madrid CF proved short-lived. Alonso, who was appointed manager last year, left the Spanish giants in January after just seven months in charge.
In an official statement, Chelsea expressed excitement over the arrival of the former Spanish international, confirming that he has signed a four-year agreement at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso now faces the challenge of reviving Chelsea’s fortunes after another frustrating season. The club’s loss in the FA Cup final extended their wait for a domestic trophy to eight years despite significant spending in the transfer market in recent seasons.
