
In a poignant “Night of Tributes” held yesterday, Corporate Nigeria and political heavyweights gathered to honor the life and legacy of the late Chief Executive Officer of Access Corporation Plc, Herbert Wigwe, whom they collectively hailed as a titan of industry.
The event was marked by heartfelt eulogies and fond reminiscences, as dignitaries from both the public and private sectors came together to pay their respects. Leading the tribute were notable figures such as Africa’s wealthiest individual, Aliko Dangote, Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and the governors of Lagos and Ogun states. Also in attendance were the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and several bank chief executives, all of whom spoke glowingly of the late banking luminary.
Herbert Wigwe, aged 57, had served as the MD/CEO of Access Bank Plc before his untimely demise in a tragic helicopter crash in the United States on February 9, 2024. His wife, Chizoba Wigwe, his son, Chizi Wigwe, and former President of the Nigeria Exchange, Mr. Abimbola Ogunbanjo, were also among the casualties of the accident.
Among the distinguished guests paying tribute were prominent figures such as the President of the African Development Bank, Akinwunmi Adesina, Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, Jim Ovia, Chairman of Coronation Capital, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, CEO of GTHoldings Plc, Segun Agbaje, CEO of FirstBank Nigeria Limited, Adesola Adedutan, and the President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Ken Okpara.
The gathering served as a poignant reminder of Herbert Wigwe’s immense contributions to the banking sector and his lasting impact on the Nigerian economy.
