In a remarkable achievement, Cristiano Ronaldo has made history by becoming the first male footballer to score 900 goals in official matches. The milestone was reached during Portugal’s UEFA Nations League match against Croatia in Lisbon on Thursday, where Ronaldo’s goal helped his team secure a 2-1 victory.
The iconic moment came in the 34th minute when Ronaldo volleyed in a cross from Nuno Mendes, putting Portugal 2-0 up. This latest goal solidifies Ronaldo’s position as one of football’s greatest players, extending his lead over his closest rival, Lionel Messi, by 58 goals. Messi currently stands at 842 goals, while Brazilian legend Pelé ranks third with 765 career goals.
Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, first broke the 800-goal barrier in 2021 during his second spell with Manchester United. His club goals are spread across Sporting CP, Real Madrid, Juventus, Manchester United, and his current team, Al Nassr. On the international stage, Ronaldo holds the all-time record for the most goals scored, with 131 goals in 209 appearances for Portugal. Messi and former Iranian striker Ali Daei both follow with 109 international goals.
Despite turning 39, Ronaldo remains as ambitious as ever, setting his sights on an even loftier goal. Speaking with his former Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand, he revealed his desire to reach 1,000 goals before he retires. “If I don’t have any injuries, that is the most important thing for me,” Ronaldo said. “My next challenge is 1,000 goals.”
Always competitive, Ronaldo emphasized the significance of his achievements in the modern era, where all his goals are documented on video, unlike football legends such as Pelé and Alfredo Di Stefano, whose careers spanned periods with less media coverage. “All the goals I have scored, they have video. I respect all of them [Pele and Di Stefano], but I don’t care about comparisons,” he added.
As Ronaldo continues to defy age and expectations, his latest achievement adds another chapter to an extraordinary career that shows no signs of slowing down.
