Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has congratulated the people of Edo State, both at home and in the diaspora, on the 35th anniversary of the state’s creation, describing the milestone as a reflection of the people’s unity, resilience and collective progress.
In a goodwill message marking the anniversary, the governor called on Edo citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the state’s journey, celebrate its achievements and renew their commitment to building a stronger and more prosperous future.
Edo State was created on August 27, 1991, following the division of the former Bendel State. Since then, successive administrations, traditional institutions, private organisations and individuals have contributed to the state’s political, social and economic development.
Okpebholo acknowledged the contributions of previous governments and other stakeholders, stressing that the progress recorded over the past 35 years was the result of collective efforts.
According to him, the anniversary provides an opportunity not only to celebrate the state’s achievements but also to assess existing challenges and determine how to accelerate development.
“Edo’s 35 years represent both an achievement and a responsibility. We inherit a state with deep cultural roots, economic potential and people with proven capacity. Our task is to translate these assets into tangible improvements in the lives of Edo citizens,” he said.
The governor reaffirmed that his administration would continue to pursue its development programmes under the SHINE Agenda, with emphasis on security, healthcare, education, infrastructure, energy and economic development.
Security and Healthcare
Okpebholo said his administration had intensified collaboration with security agencies as part of efforts to combat criminal activities and strengthen the safety of residents across the state.
He stressed that security remained fundamental to economic development, noting that investors and businesses could only thrive in an environment where lives and property were adequately protected.
The governor also highlighted healthcare as another major priority, saying his administration was upgrading health facilities and investing in the training and development of healthcare workers, particularly those serving at primary healthcare centres.
He said strengthening the primary healthcare system would improve access to essential medical services and ensure that residents, especially those in rural communities, receive quality healthcare closer to home.
Education Takes Centre Stage
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the education sector.
He said government had increased financial support to Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, and Edo State University, Uzairue, to strengthen the institutions and improve teaching and learning.
According to him, the administration was also addressing manpower shortages in public schools through the recruitment of additional teachers.
The governor said the recruitment exercise would help bridge existing gaps in the teaching workforce while improving access to quality education for children across the state.
Roads, Flyovers and Urban Renewal
On infrastructure, Okpebholo said road rehabilitation projects were ongoing in different parts of Edo State as part of efforts to improve transportation and facilitate economic activities.
He also highlighted the construction of flyovers at Ikpoba Hill and Sapele Road in Benin City, describing the projects as important components of the administration’s efforts to improve traffic management and modernise the state capital.
The governor said urban renewal projects were also being pursued to improve the appearance, functionality and overall infrastructure of major cities and communities across Edo.
He maintained that improved road networks and urban infrastructure would support businesses, facilitate movement and contribute to the state’s economic growth.
Energy Investment
Okpebholo further identified energy as a critical component of his administration’s economic development strategy.
He said the government was taking steps to expand power generation and improve electricity supply to households, businesses and industries.
He specifically cited the 100-megawatt power project at Ologbo and associated energy infrastructure being developed at the Taihu Industrial Park.
According to the governor, the projects would increase Edo’s power generation capacity and provide a more reliable electricity base for industrial activities.
He said improved power supply would help address one of the major challenges facing businesses, attract fresh investments, strengthen existing enterprises and create employment opportunities for residents.
“Reliable energy is critical to industrialisation and economic growth. We will continue to support investments that expand power generation and create the infrastructure required for businesses to thrive in Edo,” he said.
Call for Unity
As the state marks 35 years of existence, Okpebholo urged Edo people to remain united and support initiatives aimed at advancing the state.
He commended residents, traditional rulers, community leaders, businesses, civil society organisations and other stakeholders for their contributions to Edo’s development.
The governor stressed that the future of the state would depend on the collective commitment of its people and their willingness to support practical development initiatives.
“This anniversary is an opportunity for introspection and recommitment. Edo’s future depends on our collective will to do the work — not in slogans, but in concrete action,” he said.
Okpebholo wished Edo people at home and abroad peace, progress and prosperity, urging them to continue working together toward the emergence of a stronger, more economically vibrant and prosperous Edo State.
