Femi Otedola, a
prominent Nigerian billionaire, recently revealed the difficult period in his
life when he
contemplated suicide after losing a staggering $480 million in the
diesel market around 2008. Speaking at the 50th birthday celebration of Akin
Akinfemiwa in London, Otedola emphasized the importance of perseverance and
highlighted the crucial role Akinfemiwa played in revitalizing his businesses
during his darkest moments.
Otedola recalled the
series of events that led to his partnership with Akinfemiwa. In 2005, he had a
friend working at Oando, an integrated energy solutions provider, who mentioned
a colleague named Akin. Intrigued, Otedola decided to contact Akin and have a
conversation. During their initial encounter, Otedola expressed his need for a
skilled trader for his London-based training company, Fine Shade Energy.
Unfortunately, he was unable to find a suitable candidate and reached out to
Dimeji Edwards, Akin’s boss at Oando.
Akinfemiwa received the
call from Edwards and was summoned to meet Otedola. Otedola made it clear that
he wanted to offer him a job, urging him to come and work for him. However, when
Akinfemiwa returned to his superiors, Wale and Mofe, at Oando, they expressed
their skepticism, questioning Akinfemiwa’s decision to work for a man who had
reportedly fired six CEOs within six years.
Fate intervened as
Otedola recounted the events that unfolded thereafter. His business empire,
which had flourished magnificently, faced a devastating collapse due to his own
complacency. Holding 93% of the diesel market at his fingertips, Otedola became
somewhat careless, and his business suffered greatly as a result. Overwhelmed
by the tremendous losses, he found himself at a crossroads, contemplating
suicide as a way out. However, the thought of his beloved wife, Nana, and their
children stopped him from taking such a drastic step. He resolved not to succumb
to despair but to confront the harsh reality head-on by letting go of his
position and dismantling his business.
In an act of faith and
trust, Otedola decided to appoint Akinfemiwa as the CEO of his London office.
Witnessing the remarkable transformation Akinfemiwa brought to the struggling
business, Otedola was impressed beyond measure. Recognizing Akinfemiwa’s
talent, dedication, and ability to turn things around, Otedola granted him 1%
ownership of the business as a token of his gratitude.
Building upon their
successful partnership, Otedola further appointed Akinfemiwa as the CEO of
Zenon Oil, another key company in his portfolio. Impressed once again by
Akinfemiwa’s exemplary leadership, Otedola eventually entrusted him with the
role of CEO of African Petroleum, solidifying their collaboration and
emphasizing the profound impact Akinfemiwa had on Otedola’s business ventures.
Femi Otedola’s story is
one of resilience, determination, and the power of human connection. Through
the support and partnership of Akin Akinfemiwa, Otedola was able to navigate
the darkest period of his life and rebuild his empire from the ashes of
failure. Today, both men stand as testament to the strength of the human spirit
and the invaluable role of steadfast allies in times of adversity.
