Turkish football powerhouse Fenerbahçe has announced the exit of Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho, ending his tenure in Istanbul after only a single season in charge.
The club confirmed the decision on Friday through an official statement posted on its X (formerly Twitter) account.
“We have parted ways with Jose Mourinho, who has been the manager of our Professional Football A Team since the 2024/2025 season. We thank him for his efforts for our team and wish him success in his future career,” the statement read.
Mourinho, 62, joined Fenerbahçe in June 2024, arriving with great expectations given his illustrious career managing elite clubs such as Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Manchester United. His appointment was seen as a bold statement by the Turkish side, eager to re-establish dominance in both domestic and European football.
However, his spell at the club proved turbulent. Despite flashes of tactical brilliance, Fenerbahçe endured a mixed campaign, falling short in their bid for domestic silverware and struggling to make a lasting impact in continental competitions.
Mourinho’s exit continues a pattern of short-lived stints that has marked the latter stages of his managerial career. The self-proclaimed “Special One” has now departed from his fifth club in the last decade.
Fenerbahçe are expected to begin their search for a new head coach immediately as they prepare for the upcoming season. Meanwhile, Mourinho’s next move remains uncertain, though his name is likely to be linked to several clubs across Europe given his reputation and experience.
