The Federal Government has officially renamed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway, citing the President’s long-standing vision for the landmark infrastructure project.
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, announced the decision on Thursday during a media briefing in Abuja, stating that the renaming was in recognition of President Bola Tinubu’s role in conceiving the idea for the highway nearly three decades ago while serving as governor of Lagos State.
Umahi said the decision was reached in consultation with the ministry’s leadership, including the Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, directors and other officials.
According to him, Tinubu envisioned the coastal highway about 27 years ago, and the successful execution of the project reflects his determination to transform that vision into reality.
The minister praised the President for not only dreaming of the ambitious project but also securing the opportunity to bring it to fruition, describing it as a testament to his leadership and commitment to national development.
Umahi also disclosed that President Tinubu had approved the extension of the Fourth Legacy Highway by an additional 400 kilometres, increasing its planned length to approximately 1,100 kilometres.
He further announced presidential approval for several other major infrastructure projects, including the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway with reinforced concrete pavement, the completion of the long-delayed Ibi Bridge in Taraba State, the construction of the 5.76-kilometre Lau Bridge, and the dualisation of another 400 kilometres of the East-West Road.
Giving an update on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Umahi said work is progressing steadily across multiple sections. He noted that the first phase, running from Victoria Island to Eleko Village in Lagos, has become a model for modern highway construction.
The second section, extending from Eleko to the Lagos-Ogun boundary, is about 60 percent complete and is expected to be substantially delivered by November, he added.
Construction activities are also underway in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Ogun and Ondo states as work continues on the multi-state coastal highway project.
