After the Super Falcons’
impressive 3-2 victory against Australia in the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s
World
Cup on Thursday, several key talking points emerged from the game.
Randy Waldrum’s Fearlessness on
Display Again
Once more, Randy Waldrum
showcased his bold decision-making as a coach. In the opening match against
Canada, he courageously placed Captain Onome Ebi on the bench, opting to pair
young defender Oluwatosin Demehin with Osinachi Ohale in central defense.
In another display of bravery,
Waldrum entrusted Deborah Abiodun, a newcomer, in the defensive midfield
position against the Olympic champions, Australia. Furthermore, he was unafraid
to keep experienced winger, Francisca Ordega, on the substitutes’ bench,
despite her underwhelming performance against Canada. Demehin, who had started
in the first match, continued in central defense for the team.
Toni Payne Shines with
Versatility
Toni Payne from Sevilla, Spain,
proved to be a valuable asset to the team due to her versatility. Having been
deployed as a right-back during the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in
Morocco, she excelled when pushed to the right-wing in the game against Canada.
However, her true brilliance was on display in central midfield during the
match against Australia at Lang Park, Brisbane, where she put up a sublime
performance.
Chiamaka Nnadozie’s Stellar Goalkeeping
Chiamaka Nnadozie, the talented
goalkeeper, once again displayed her class by making several crucial saves
early in the game. While she couldn’t prevent Emily van Egmond’s opening goal
for Australia in the latter part of the first half, Nnadozie remained a
dependable star for the Super Falcons throughout the match.
Osinachi Ohale Earns Player of
the Match Award
Osinachi Ohale, the experienced
31-year-old center-back, was recognized as the Player of the Match. As in the
previous game, she exhibited exceptional defensive skills and organization,
leading the backline with finesse. Ohale contributed with two tackles, four
clearances, and even managed to score a goal.
Ifeoma Onumonu’s Struggles
Continue
Unfortunately, Gotham FC forward
Ifeoma Onumonu once again failed to make an impact in the Nigerian colors.
Given the opportunity to lead the Super Falcons’ attack in place of Asisat
Oshoala, Onumonu remained anonymous during the 63 minutes she spent on the
pitch.
