The football world is in mourning following the tragic death of former Arsenal striker Billy Vigar, who passed away at the age of 21 after suffering a severe brain injury during a match for Chichester City.
Vigar collapsed during an Isthmian League Premier Division game against Wingate & Finchley on Saturday, prompting the match to be abandoned just 13 minutes after kickoff. He was immediately taken to hospital and placed in an induced coma in a desperate attempt to save his life.
In a heartbreaking statement released on Thursday, September 25, Vigar’s family confirmed his passing:
“After sustaining a significant brain injury last Saturday, Billy Vigar was put in an induced coma. On Tuesday, he needed an operation to aid any chances of recovery. Although this helped, the injury proved too much for him and he passed away on Thursday morning.
The responses to the original update show how much Billy was thought of and loved within the sport. His family are devastated that this has happened whilst he was playing the sport that he loved.”
Chichester City Football Club also expressed their sorrow, asking for privacy for the grieving family.
“It is with great sadness that Chichester City Football Club has to confirm the passing of Billy Vigar. We request that his family’s privacy is respected at this most difficult time,” the club stated.
Vigar’s journey in football began at the age of 14 when he joined Arsenal’s Hale End Academy in 2017 after being scouted from his hometown club, Hove Rivervale FC. Known for his goal-scoring ability and passion for the game, he netted 17 goals in his debut season at the academy.
He signed his first professional contract with Arsenal in 2022, later spending loan spells at Derby County and Eastbourne Borough, before moving to Hastings United in 2024. Vigar joined Chichester City at the start of the current season.
Arsenal Football Club paid tribute to their former player in an emotional statement:
“Everyone at Arsenal Football Club is deeply sorry to hear of the tragic passing of Chichester City forward and former Arsenal academy player, Billy Vigar.
Billy joined our academy on schoolboy terms aged 14, after being scouted at his home town club Hove Rivervale FC and excelled as a striker at Hale End, scoring 17 goals in his debut season.
As well as his significant talent, Billy will always be remembered for his love of the game, pride at representing our football club — he once called the day he was spotted by our scouts as ‘the most important of his life’ — and a character beloved by teammates and coaches alike.
Our deepest condolences go out to the Vigar family and his many friends at this extremely difficult time.”
Vigar’s untimely death has sparked an outpouring of grief across the football community, with tributes pouring in from clubs, teammates, and fans who remembered him as a gifted player and a beloved figure both on and off the pitch.
