Nigerian football is mourning the loss of former Super Eagles winger and left-footed maestro, Okwuchukwu “Allen” Waobikeze, who passed away peacefully on Sunday evening. His death comes just days after the loss of former national team captain and legendary goalkeeper, Peter Rufai.
Fondly known as “Babaoo” by fans and teammates, Waobikeze was celebrated for his deft touches, pace on the flanks, and commanding left foot. Though he featured in limited appearances for the national team due to intense competition during the golden era of Nigerian football, his impact on the domestic league was significant.
Waobikeze’s club career spanned across top-tier Nigerian teams, including Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, BCC Lions of Gboko, and the once-dominant Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland FC). His brilliance on the wing and ability to change games earned him respect and admiration in stadiums across the country.
His death was confirmed by his brother, Eli Waobikeze, who announced the news via Facebook:
“On behalf of the Waobikeze family, I would like to announce the peaceful passing to eternal glory of my brother Allen Okwuchukwu Waobikeze. He transitioned at about 7:34 pm CST.
We appreciate everyone who prayed, called, and visited my brother… Please keep our family in your prayers as we plan to send forth our beloved brother.”
While the cause of death was not disclosed, family members noted that he had been battling health issues in recent months.
Waobikeze’s former clubs, fans, and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) have begun expressing condolences, remembering his creativity on the pitch and humility off it.
A statement from Heartland FC described him as “a humble warrior whose football legacy will remain with us forever.” The NFF is expected to release an official statement and possibly coordinate a tribute in his honour during upcoming fixtures.
Funeral arrangements are underway and will be announced by the family in the coming days. Waobikeze is survived by his wife, children, and extended family.
His passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian football lovers who remember the thrill and passion he brought to the game.
