Rivers State Governor Similanyi Fubara addressed a gathering of his supporters, accusing security agencies of complicity amidst the ongoing crisis in the state. The statement came on Monday following the removal of Edie Edison as the Majority Leader of the Rivers House of Assembly.
In his address, Fubara expressed his concerns, alleging that security forces targeted him directly. He stated, “From what I have seen, the security agency is even compromised. They were shooting at me directly but it doesn’t matter, somebody will die one day.”
Amidst assertions of his innocence and lack of animosity towards anyone, Fubara stressed his commitment to the governance and security of the state. He declared, “I’m not against anybody. I’m not planning anything against anybody that I don’t know where these things are coming from. Let it be put on record that whoever masterminded this is trying to shift… I heard some people gathered to do whatever. That is purely rubbish.”
The Governor highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and emphasized his position as the chief security officer of the state, asserting that any actions taken against him or the state government would be considered null and void.
The situation intensified as reports from The PUNCH indicated gunfire and the use of tear gas within the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex on Monday, coinciding with attempts by certain lawmakers to initiate an impeachment process against Fubara. In response, Fubara stated that he had not engaged in any misconduct warranting an impeachment by the State House of Assembly.
Tensions in the region remain high as the political landscape of Rivers State continues to face significant unrest and upheaval.
