A Ghana Premier League footballer, Dominic Frimpong, has died after armed robbers ambushed his team’s bus while returning from an away match, authorities confirmed on Monday.
The attack occurred on Sunday night as players of Berekum Chelsea FC were traveling back from a fixture. In a statement, the club said masked gunmen armed with rifles opened fire on the bus, forcing players and officials to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the incident took place around 10:30 p.m. local time along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District of the Ashanti Region. Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds during the напад and later died in hospital while receiving treatment.
Police also reported that another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of 4,500 cedis (approximately $408) during the incident.
The Ghana Football Association described Frimpong’s death as a “tragic loss” to both his club and the nation’s football community.
“Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the association said.
The 20-year-old forward had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana Stars FC earlier this year. He made 13 appearances and scored two goals during his stint with the club, according to local reports.
