In the serene town of Oba, Idemili North Local Government
Area of Anambra State, a
native doctor named Chidozie Nwangwu, fondly called
Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki, found himself at the mercy of ruthless kidnappers. It was
a dark and fateful night on Sunday, July 23, around 11:30 pm when his peaceful
existence was shattered.
Kidnapped from his Triple P Hotel, Chidozie Nwangwu was
forced into a terrifying ordeal that would test his courage and resilience. The
kidnappers, demanding an exorbitant ransom, held him captive in a secret den,
far from the safety of his home.
Nwangwu could have attempted to escape from his captors, as
he had the skills and knowledge to potentially outwit them. However, he
realized that if he fled, the kidnappers would retaliate by inflicting harm on
more innocent lives. Driven by a profound sense of responsibility, he made a
life-altering decision to remain with them, despite the immense danger he
faced.
The days dragged on as his friends and colleagues desperately
pooled their resources to gather the ransom demanded by the abductors. Finally,
in the early hours of Saturday, freedom beckoned as the ransom was paid,
leading to his release.
The Anambra State Police confirmed his release, but the
actual amount paid remained undisclosed. Speculations pointed to a substantial
sum, possibly ranging from N200 million to N300 million. The native doctor’s
friends and well-wishers contributed generously, showing unwavering support for
their beloved Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki.
Overwhelmed with relief and joy, Chidozie Nwangwu returned to
his home in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, where celebrations
ensued. But amidst the jubilation, the memory of the horrifying events he
witnessed during captivity lingered in his mind.
Nwangwu recounted the chilling experience of the gruesome
killings that took place in the kidnappers’ den. They had callously executed
about 20 innocent victims in front of him, sparing no mercy. Their targets were
people they believed to be affluent, intending to amass wealth through their
criminal activities.
During his time in captivity, Nwangwu listened to the radio
broadcasts that were spreading misinformation about his situation. Determined
to set the record straight, he bravely shared the truth behind his abduction.
It all began with an innocent invitation from someone named Okey Japan, asking
him to visit his hotel, where money was being spent lavishly. Obliging the
request, Nwangwu arrived at the hotel in his new car, only for the night to
take a dark turn.
As gunshots echoed through the air, chaos erupted, and people
ran for their lives. In the crossfire, two of Nwangwu’s security personnel were
tragically killed. In the midst of the pandemonium, he faced a pivotal choice –
to escape and safeguard himself or to stay and prevent further loss of innocent
lives.
Knowing that he possessed protective charms, he realized that
if he abandoned the other captives, the kidnappers would exact brutal revenge
on them. In a bold and selfless act, he chose to follow his abductors, ensuring
their wrath was directed solely at him, thus sparing the lives of many others.
In the wake of his harrowing experience, Chidozie Nwangwu
emerged as a symbol of bravery and altruism. His story echoed through the
region, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who heard it. While he
bore the scars of his captivity, he stood firm in the knowledge that he had
saved lives through his sacrificial act.
As the authorities continued their pursuit of the heartless
criminals, the community rallied around Nwangwu, supporting him in his journey
of healing and recovery. And though the dark chapter of his kidnapping had come
to an end, the tale of the fearless native doctor who risked everything to save
others would forever resonate as a testament to the strength of the human
spirit.
