Reports indicate that members of the House of Representatives, commonly known as the Green Chamber, have commenced receiving their Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), as revealed by Sunday PUNCH.
Simultaneously, legislators in the Senate, the Red Chamber, are anticipated to receive the initial batch of these SUVs during the upcoming week. It has been disclosed that the final set of vehicles for parliamentary use will arrive before December.
The decision by the National Assembly leadership to purchase imported SUVs for each lawmaker and provide bulletproof vehicles for principal officers has ignited significant criticism. This move has been widely condemned, with many citizens accusing the lawmakers of insensitivity towards the populace, especially amid the nation’s escalating living costs.
Various organizations, such as the Human Rights Writers Association and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, have openly criticized the procurement. They have expressed their disapproval by stating that acquiring these vehicles, especially amid societal struggles such as poverty and failing infrastructure, is highly provocative.
Despite these criticisms, the Senate defended the acquisition, asserting that the vehicles are essential for legislative operations.
Akin Rotimi, the House of Representatives spokesperson, confirmed that the delivery process has commenced, emphasizing that priority has been given to certain categories of lawmakers, including women, individuals with disabilities, and those without pending court cases.
Adding to this, an unnamed member of the Green Chamber highlighted that the management is particularly focused on ensuring that the vehicles are utilized solely for legislative activities. A circular was issued to members, strictly prohibiting the sale of these vehicles, affirming their status as National Assembly property.
Sources within the assembly disclosed that the vehicles will be delivered in three installments for the use of committee chairpersons and members. While these SUVs have sparked controversy, it is highlighted that they are intended to assist lawmakers in carrying out their official duties effectively.
