Lionel Messi delivered a match-winning performance as Inter Miami edged the Colorado Rapids 3-2 in a dramatic encounter, handing new head coach Guillermo Hoyos a victory in his debut game.
The Argentine superstar scored twice, including a stunning late winner, in front of over 75,000 fans who filled Denver’s NFL stadium for the high-profile Major League Soccer clash.
Inter Miami appeared in control after taking a 2-0 lead, with Messi opening the scoring from the penalty spot before setting up German Berterame for a second goal just before halftime. However, Colorado mounted a spirited comeback in the second half. Goals from Rafael Navarro and Darren Yapi brought the home side level, shifting momentum in their favor.
But Messi once again proved decisive. With just over 10 minutes remaining, he latched onto a through ball from Rodrigo De Paul, dribbled into the box, and calmly slotted the ball past multiple defenders to restore Miami’s lead.
The victory marked a strong start for Hoyos, who recently replaced Javier Mascherano following his departure for personal reasons. The coach praised Messi’s impact, describing him as a player capable of completely transforming matches.
The win lifts Inter Miami to second place in the Eastern Conference, reinforcing their strong form as reigning MLS champions.
Despite the excitement, the match ended on a sour note as Yannick Bright was sent off late in the game for dissent after protesting a booking.
