The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed German coach Bruno Labbadia as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, marking him as the 37th coach in the team’s history. The NFF announced the decision early Tuesday, following approval by its Executive Committee.
In a statement, NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi said, “The NFF Executive Committee has approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee to appoint Mr. Bruno Labbadia as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles. The appointment is with immediate effect.”
Born in Darmstadt, Germany, on February 8, 1966, Labbadia brings a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach. During his playing career, he earned two caps for the German national team and played for several prominent clubs, including Bayern Munich, Hamburger SV, and FC Kaiserslautern. He won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich in 1994.
As a coach, Labbadia has managed several well-known teams in Germany, such as Hertha Berlin, VfB Stuttgart, VfL Wolfsburg, and Bayer Leverkusen. He holds a UEFA Pro License, the highest coaching qualification in European football.
Labbadia becomes the sixth German to manage the Super Eagles, following in the footsteps of coaches like Berti Vogts and Gernot Rohr. Notably, Rohr led Nigeria to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Labbadia’s first major challenge will be guiding the Super Eagles through two critical 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches. Nigeria will face Benin Republic on September 7th in Uyo, followed by a match against Rwanda on September 10th in Kigali. These matches are crucial as Nigeria seeks to secure its place in the upcoming AFCON tournament.
The new coach inherits a team with a rich history and high expectations. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as Labbadia begins his tenure, hoping to build on the legacy of his predecessors and lead the Super Eagles to success on the continental and global stages.
