A tragic incident occurred in Imobi, Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, where a wandering elephant from a government forest reserve attacked and killed a farmer.
The incident, which has thrown the community into shock, was confirmed on Tuesday by the Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Taiwo Oludotun.
Speaking to our correspondent, Oludotun said the state government had immediately mobilized a response team to the area to assess the situation and prevent further danger.
“Yes, we are aware, and we are already on our way to the community,” the commissioner stated, without giving further details on the circumstances leading to the attack.
Local sources suggest that the elephant, believed to have strayed from its natural habitat in search of food, wandered into farmland where it encountered the deceased. The sudden encounter reportedly triggered the fatal attack.
The state government is expected to work with wildlife experts and forest rangers to manage the animal and ensure the safety of residents in the affected area.
This incident has reignited discussions about the management of wildlife within Ogun State’s forest reserves and the need for improved safety measures for communities bordering protected areas.
