LeBron James and his son, Bronny James, made NBA history on Sunday night by becoming the first father and son to play together in a game. The duo shared the court during the Los Angeles Lakers’ 118-114 preseason loss to the Phoenix Suns at Arcisure Arena.
The historic moment occurred early in the second quarter when 20-year-old Bronny, who was celebrating his birthday, checked into the game and joined his father. It was a momentous occasion for the James family and the basketball world.
“For a father, this means everything,” LeBron James said afterward. “I never had this growing up, so to be able to share the court with my son is one of the greatest things I could ever wish for.”
Lakers coach JJ Redick had informed LeBron before the game that he and Bronny would likely play together, allowing both to mentally prepare for the historic event. “Just wanted to get them a chance to play together in the preseason,” Redick said. “It speaks to LeBron’s longevity and Bronny’s hard work to get to this point.”
Although the two shared just 4 minutes and 9 seconds of game time, the father-son duo created several memorable moments. They both played tough defense, and at one point, stood side by side while disputing a foul call on Bronny. The only thing missing was a father-son scoring play, as Bronny missed a three-pointer off a pass from his dad.
LeBron, who is entering his 22nd season, expressed his surreal experience playing alongside Bronny. “We came out of the timeout, and he was picking up full court. I looked at him, and it was like, ‘Is this real life?’ It felt like something out of ‘The Matrix.'”
Despite the historical significance, Bronny struggled in his first game alongside his father. In 13 minutes of action, he didn’t score, missing his only shot and committing four turnovers. However, his defensive efforts impressed both his father and Lakers teammates, including Anthony Davis, who praised Bronny’s defensive instincts and physicality.
“He’s still learning the game at this level,” Davis said. “But defensively, he’s already showing great potential.”
Bronny has maintained his calm demeanor through this whirlwind year, having overcome significant challenges, including recovering from cardiac arrest during his freshman year at USC. Now, as a rookie in the NBA, he remains focused on improving his game, particularly on defense.
Reflecting on the experience of playing alongside his father, Bronny said, “He’s my dad, but on the court, he’s just my teammate. I focus on playing the game.”
While the Lakers drafted Bronny with the 55th overall pick in June, this game marks the first step in what could be a long and storied journey for the James family, with LeBron’s dream of sharing the court with his son finally realized.
