In the early hours of Friday, a devastating fire broke out at a residential building located in the affluent South Kensington neighborhood of London, resulting in 11 individuals being hospitalized and approximately 130 residents evacuated, according to fire officials.
The alarming incident prompted a rapid response from emergency services, with fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters swiftly deployed to the scene. The blaze originated at a terraced house converted into apartments on Emperor’s Gate, situated in the southwest of the British capital and in close proximity to the renowned Natural History Museum.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a dire situation as flames engulfed half of the ground floor of the five-storey building. The fire rapidly escalated, spreading to the top floor and roof, posing a significant challenge to containment efforts.
Station Commander Steve Collins, overseeing operations at the scene, described the intensity of the situation, stating, “The fire has spread from the ground floor to the top floor and roof. Crews are working hard to… stop it spreading to adjacent buildings.”
In a daring rescue operation, five individuals were safely evacuated using ladders, while approximately 130 residents were swiftly evacuated from the affected property and neighboring buildings as a precautionary measure.
Tragically, the inferno resulted in 11 people requiring treatment for smoke inhalation, who were subsequently transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention, the fire service confirmed.
