Legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, known worldwide as “The Greatest,” is set to be posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2024, as announced by Variety, a foreign news outlet, on Monday. The induction will take place during this year’s WrestleMania festivities in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 5.
Ali, a three-time World Heavyweight Boxing Champion and Olympic gold medalist, captivated audiences not only with his prowess in the ring but also with his charisma and larger-than-life personality. Beyond sports, Ali was known for his activism and artistic endeavors, establishing himself as an iconic figure.
One of Ali’s notable moments in the world of sports entertainment occurred on June 26, 1976, when he participated in “The War of the Worlds,” an exhibition match against Antonio Inoki at the Nippon Budokan arena in Tokyo, Japan. This event, held under unique rules, drew a crowd of 32,000 spectators and garnered significant viewership via closed-circuit television, including 33,000 fans at Shea Stadium in Queens, New York. Many consider this match a precursor to modern mixed martial arts, highlighting Ali’s enduring influence.
Although Ali retired from boxing with an impressive record of 56-5, including 37 knockouts, his association with combat sports continued. He notably served as the special guest referee for the inaugural WrestleMania in 1984, officiating the main event featuring Hulk Hogan & Mr. T against “Rowdy” Roddy Piper & “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff. Ali’s involvement in the match, including delivering his signature right-hand punch to Piper, left a lasting impression on the event.
Ali passed away on June 3, 2016, at the age of 74, marking the end of an era. However, his legacy as one of the greatest athletes of all time continues to inspire generations worldwide.
