Elon Musk unveiled his own artificial intelligence venture,
xAI, on Wednesday, aiming to rival
OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Musk accused
OpenAI of political bias and irresponsibility, prompting his decision to
establish xAI.
According to the xAI website, Musk will manage the company
separately from his other ventures, with the technology developed benefiting
his various businesses, including Twitter. The website stated that xAI’s
objective is to comprehend the fundamental nature of the universe.
Musk took to Twitter to elaborate on the company’s mission,
stating that xAI seeks to “understand reality” and address life’s
most significant questions. The startup has assembled a team of former
researchers from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Tesla, and the University of Toronto.
Dan Hendrycks, the leader of the Center for AI Safety, a San
Francisco-based organization advocating caution in AI development, will serve
as an advisor to the xAI team. Hendrycks was also involved in an open letter to
global leaders in June, warning about the risks of AI to human existence,
comparable to pandemics and nuclear war.
Musk has consistently highlighted the dangers of AI,
considering it “our biggest existential threat” and cautioning
against rapid advancement, likening it to “summoning the demon.” He
co-founded OpenAI in 2015 due to concerns over Google’s hasty pursuit of AI.
However, he departed from OpenAI in 2018 to focus on Tesla, citing discomfort
with the profit-oriented direction under CEO Sam Altman’s leadership.
Musk also argues that OpenAI’s large language models,
including ChatGPT, have an excessive tendency to be politically correct. In
April, he revealed plans for his own AI tool, “TruthGPT,” during an
interview with Fox News, known for its conservative stance.
Launching an AI company on par with OpenAI or Google DeepMind
would require substantial investment, particularly regarding the required GPUs
(semiconductors) predominantly manufactured by California-based Nvidia.
