In a recent development, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing
Edo North, expressed strong
disapproval of the proposed N30,000 minimum wage in
Nigeria. A prominent figure in Nigerian politics and former Chairman of the All
Progressives Congress (APC), Oshiomhole criticized the current minimum wage,
labeling it a “criminal wage.” He highlighted that he personally pays
his cleaner a monthly salary of N60,000.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics,
Oshiomhole voiced his concerns about the adequacy of the current minimum wage
for workers, referring to it as a “criminal wage.”
The issue of his cleaner’s remuneration took an unexpected turn
when it was revealed that the individual responsible for household cleaning was
a primary school student. Doubts arose about her having a school leaving
certificate, adding to the intrigue. Despite her expertise in household
cleaning, she was also knowledgeable in various other areas.
Oshiomhole explained that he felt compelled to pay her no less
than N60,000 after considering the financial commitments she may have, such as
providing for her family of four children.
The lawmaker clarified that President Bola Tinubu never promised
to swiftly address all of the nation’s challenges and should not be expected to
possess magical powers. He emphasized that the ruling All Progressives Congress
(APC) remains committed to fulfilling its campaign promises but never pledged
an immediate resolution to all issues within a 24-hour timeframe.
In response to a request for evidence of any such claim, the
lawmaker candidly acknowledged that no miraculous solutions were promised
during the election process. He stressed that as an informed individual, he had
a comprehensive understanding of the party’s promises and that no explicit
guarantees were made for a 24-hour or overnight solution.
