In a recent development, the Nigerian naira witnessed a decline against the US dollar, with the parallel market and the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM) both experiencing changes in exchange rates.
As of yesterday, the parallel market recorded a fall to N1,295 per dollar compared to the N1,265 per dollar rate observed on Monday. Meanwhile, the NAFEM indicated a depreciation in the naira, with the exchange rate rising to N878.57 per dollar from the previous N838.95 per dollar recorded on the preceding Monday. This marks a substantial N39.62 depreciation in the official foreign exchange market.
Data sourced from the Financial Markets Dealers Quotations (FMDQ) revealed the shift in exchange rates, further highlighting the widening gap between the parallel and official markets. The gap, which stood at N426.05 per dollar on Monday, has now narrowed to N416.43 per dollar as of yesterday.
The fluctuations in exchange rates are indicative of the challenges faced by the naira in the foreign exchange landscape, impacting both parallel and official market segments. Analysts are closely monitoring these developments, considering their implications for the broader economic outlook.
