Retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, a former spokesman of the Nigerian Army, has died while in the custody of bandits who abducted him alongside his wife in Katsina State, according to the state government.
The tragic development was confirmed by the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Muazu, who said the retired military officer succumbed to health complications while being held captive.
In a statement issued on behalf of the state government, Muazu disclosed that General Rabe died from complications related to diabetes and hypertension despite efforts by security agencies and government authorities to secure his freedom.
“With profound sadness, we confirm the death of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in bandits’ captivity,” the statement said. “Despite relentless efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure his release, the situation ended tragically. His death is a monumental loss not only to his family and Katsina State but also to the nation.”
Katsina State Governor, Dikko Umaru Radda, expressed condolences to the bereaved family, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the security challenges facing the country. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working with federal authorities and security agencies to combat banditry and bring those responsible to justice.
General Rabe and his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, were kidnapped on May 30, 2026, while travelling along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. Armed bandits reportedly ambushed their vehicle near Zakin Baure village, injuring their driver during the attack.
Days after the abduction, the kidnappers released a video showing the couple in captivity. In the footage, Hajiya Amina appealed to government authorities to meet the demands of the abductors, including the release of three detained associates and the return of livestock allegedly confiscated from them.
General Rabe also appealed for dialogue and a peaceful resolution that would secure their release.
Reacting to the development, President Bola Tinubu expressed shock and sorrow over the former army spokesman’s death. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended condolences to General Rabe’s family, the Katsina State Government, and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Tinubu reiterated his administration’s stance against negotiating with terrorists through the release of detained criminal suspects.
“Bandits, kidnappers and sponsors of terror should surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian state,” the President said, adding that the government would continue its efforts to defeat insecurity across the country.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Hajiya Amina Abubakar has regained her freedom. Sources familiar with the development said the kidnappers handed her over alive to Katsina State authorities along with the remains of her husband.
The late General’s body was subsequently transported to Kaduna, where burial arrangements were underway. The release of his wife brings a measure of relief to the family, even as the nation mourns the loss of the retired senior military officer.
