Basketball legend LeBron James has praised United States forward Folarin Balogun after the striker celebrated his goal with James’ trademark “Silencer” gesture during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina at the FIFA World Cup.
Balogun found the back of the net twice during Wednesday’s match, performing James’ famous celebration on both occasions. However, his first goal was ruled out for offside, leaving his second-half strike as the one that counted.
Reacting to the celebration, James shared his excitement on X, writing that the “Silencer” had arrived at the World Cup while congratulating the 24-year-old striker on what he described as an outstanding goal.
The social media post quickly gained widespread attention, attracting nearly four million views.
James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, is renowned for using the “Silencer” celebration after making decisive baskets. The routine involves lifting the knees, pressing both palms downward and tapping the chest, symbolizing the act of quieting critics or opposing fans.
Balogun, who was born in New York City, raised in London, and currently plays club football in France, has long been known for his passion for basketball.
During the United States Soccer Federation’s efforts to convince him to represent the U.S. instead of England or Nigeria, officials reportedly flew him to Florida and treated him to courtside seats at an NBA game as part of their recruitment campaign.
The striker has now scored three goals at the tournament, helping the United States advance to the Round of 16.
However, Balogun will miss Monday’s knockout clash against Belgium after receiving a red card in the second half of the victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Meanwhile, James recently made headlines after announcing that he will leave the Los Angeles Lakers while continuing his playing career with another franchise. The move will see the 41-year-old embark on an unprecedented 24th NBA season, sending shockwaves across the league as free agency began.
