Nigerians Face Uncertainty as UK Removes Over 100 Jobs from Skilled Worker Visa List

In a sweeping immigration policy reform, the United Kingdom has eliminated more than 100 mid-skilled occupations from its Skilled Worker visa eligibility list — a decision that is set to have far-reaching consequences for many Nigerian migrants currently working in the UK and those intending to move there.

The announcement was made by the UK Home Office as part of what Home Secretary Yvette Cooper described as a “complete reset of our immigration system,” aimed at tightening migration control and refocusing on domestic skill development.

“We are delivering a complete reset of our immigration system to restore proper control and order,” Cooper stated. “The previous government allowed net migration to quadruple in just four years. These new rules introduce stronger controls to bring those numbers down and invest in training and employment opportunities here in the UK.”

Among the roles removed from eligibility are jobs in hospitality, construction, and skilled trades — sectors in which many Nigerians and other foreign workers have traditionally found employment. These jobs, previously recognized under RQF (Regulated Qualifications Framework) levels 3 to 5, are no longer valid routes for obtaining a Skilled Worker visa.

What Has Changed?

Under the revised framework:

  • The minimum skill level for Skilled Worker visas has been raised to RQF Level 6+, effectively excluding mid-level skilled jobs.
  • The social care visa route has been closed to new overseas applicants due to concerns about exploitation and abuse in the sector.
  • A Temporary Shortage Occupation List (TSL) and a revised Immigration Salary List (ISL) have been introduced, allowing short-term access to only essential roles. Many of these come with strict conditions — including no dependants and fixed expiration dates.
  • The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has been tasked with reviewing the TSL and advising on whether some excluded occupations should be reinstated.

Impact on Nigerians in the UK

These developments mean that many Nigerians working in the UK under the old Skilled Worker criteria may no longer qualify for visa renewal unless they switch to roles that meet the new higher requirements. Those considering a change of employer or role must also ensure the job falls under the revised eligibility lists and meets the updated salary thresholds.

What Nigerian Migrants Should Do Now

To navigate the new immigration landscape, experts advise the following steps:

  • Check job eligibility: Use the UK’s CASCOT occupation tool to determine if your current or prospective job remains eligible.
  • Review sponsorship timeline: If your Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) was issued before April 4, 2024, you may still benefit from the previous, more lenient salary rules.
  • Consult legal experts: Seek timely advice from regulated immigration professionals if you are unsure about your visa status or at risk of losing eligibility.
  • Explore alternative routes: For those affected, consider applying for higher-skilled jobs, switching to a student visa, or exploring entrepreneurial pathways.

The reforms, while aiming to strengthen the UK’s local labor market, are already creating uncertainty for thousands of migrants — including Nigerians — who now face difficult choices about their future in the country.

As the UK moves forward with these changes, many await further clarification from the Home Office and the Migration Advisory Committee’s final recommendations on the new Temporary Shortage List.
