Tragic news shook the Nollywood industry as the beloved
veteran actress, Cynthia Nkiru Okereke,
passed away at the age of 63. The
announcement of her demise was made by her colleague and friend, Joseph
Okechukwu, on the sorrowful evening of July 11, 2023.
Joseph, with a heavy heart, shared the devastating news,
revealing that he had intended to cover Cynthia Okereke’s travel expenses to
America. However, the shocking revelation came to him on that Tuesday night
that she had departed from this world. The weight of the loss was immeasurable,
and Joseph struggled to find words to express his grief.
In his heartfelt tribute, he mourned, “REST IN PEACE,
Nwanyi oma. I’m shattered beyond words. The fact that I was about to pay for
your flight ticket to come finish what we started, only to hear you went to be
with the Lord just last night, is one of the toughest things I’ve had to deal
with in recent times.” The suddenness of her passing left him reeling in
disbelief, grappling with the realization that life can be so transient.
Joseph continued to reminisce about their friendship that
spanned over two decades, describing Cynthia as an extraordinary, decent, and
delightful soul to be around. He expressed his deep sorrow and inability to
comprehend the untimely and unceremonious exit of someone he held dear. Words
failed him as he struggled to come to terms with the loss. In a final farewell,
Joseph bid Cynthia to rest in eternal peace, hoping to find solace in the
belief that they will reunite in glory someday.
It’s worth noting that Cynthia Okereke had previously endured
a harrowing experience the year before, when she was kidnapped alongside her
colleague, Clemson Cormel, in Enugu State. Although the details of their
kidnapping were not mentioned in the recent announcement, it serves as a
reminder of the challenges she faced during her life.
The Nollywood community and fans alike mourned the loss of
Cynthia Nkiru Okereke, an accomplished actress whose contributions to the
industry will be cherished and remembered. Her passing leaves a void that will
be difficult to fill, but her legacy will endure, inspiring future generations
of actors and actresses in Nigeria and beyond.
