Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has dismissed allegations of inciting the people of the South-East against the federal government as unfounded.
Obi made this assertion in a statement released via his verified social media handle on Thursday in response to accusations made by Minister of Works, David Umahi, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos on Wednesday.
Umahi had accused Obi of inciting people of the South-East against the federal government over the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project, citing Obi’s past implementation of demolition of structures for road infrastructure while he was governor of Anambra.
However, Obi described the allegations as a “baseless distraction” aimed at tarnishing his character, emphasizing that his focus has always been on fostering constructive dialogue and inclusivity rather than engaging in divisive politics.
He further stated, “Claims of incitement are baseless distractions. I have always advocated for unity and advancement, refusing to partake in reactionary divisive politics. Worse still, I have never and can never descend so low as to base my political aspirations on any sectional or ethnic interest.”
Obi has been critical of the federal government’s handling of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project, labeling it a misplaced priority. The project, which involves the construction of a 700-kilometre road along the shoreline of beach resorts in Lagos and traversing eight other states, has sparked controversy over funding and the impact on businesses during construction.
Reacting to criticisms about the demolition of structures, Obi defended his actions as governor, stating that structures obstructing existing roads and lacking approval were removed. He challenged anyone to provide evidence to the contrary, asserting that his approach aimed to prioritize the repair and maintenance of existing infrastructure over projects that risked disruption and destruction.
